Praise from family: ‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart’

September 6, 2017

Betty Ward has long been a familiar face at Skiff thanks to her volunteer work in the Auxiliary gift shop. Unfortunately, her recent times at the hospital have been for less enjoyable reasons.

“My mom has had a few falls,” said Betty’s daughter, Mary Ahrenholz. “These falls have led to various injuries, including a broken wrist, broken bones in her feet and fractured vertebrae.”

Betty is 90 years old, and she has been married to her husband Dean for nearly seven decades. Mary, who doesn’t live locally, said it is difficult being far away from her mother during times of injury and ill health.

“Being hospitalized is tough during the best of circumstances, but even more so when your family can’t be right there all the time,” Mary said. “That is why it gave us such tremendous peace of mind when we observed the remarkable care she received from the Skiff nurses. Knowing she was in such good hands put us at ease.”

The nurses were not alone in going above and beyond for Betty. Mary was astonished by the efforts of the Skiff dietary staff when Betty struggled with a complete lack of appetite.

“The staff offered to make foods not available on the room service menu to see if that would help her want to eat, because they knew how important nutrition was to her healing,” Mary said. “Our hearts were touched by their generosity. The cafeteria staff at Skiff is one of the best parts of this hospital.”

Mary wrote not one but two letters to Skiff president Laurie Conner to highlight those who dedicated themselves to Betty’s care.

“I want to make sure they know their efforts have blessed us and have not gone unnoticed,” said Mary. “I say thank you to them from the bottom of my heart.”
