New audiologist brings wealth of experience to Skiff

October 4, 2017

Skiff Medical Center is excited to welcome new audiologist Christine Pernetti to the Skiff family. Pernetti, who has been an audiologist since 1985, lives near Amana, Iowa, and works part-time in her new role. She sees her own patients on Mondays and Tuesdays, and has Wednesdays dedicated to working with patients of ear/nose/throat physician Dr. Mark Zlab.

The clinical setting is a big change from her most recent role. For the past 18 years, she served as an occupational audiologist at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, focused especially on hearing conservation for industrial workers.

“The decision was made to close that program, so that freed me up to explore something new, leading me to learn about this opening in Newton,” Pernetti said.

Pernetti not only enjoyed those she met when visiting Skiff – “I was impressed at the genuine sincerity of everyone, and their passion at what they do” – but she was also excited at the chance to learn about all the advancements that have happened in clinical audiology since she last worked in that part of the industry.

“The technology has really advanced,” she said. “I used to adjust hearing aids with tiny screwdrivers, and now they’re digital and can be programmed via computer. It’s really cool what they can do now. They’re amazing, and that’s such a benefit to my patients.”

Pernetti was initially drawn to a career in audiology during high school, when she babysat for a child with severe hearing impairment. “I met his audiologist during a house call, and I was eager to learn more.”

She eventually received her training in audiology, including her master’s degree, at Central Michigan University. “It was a great program, where they had us working in clinics as we learned. That fit my style, as I like delving in and actually doing.”

That hands-on approach isn’t limited to her career. When not at work, Pernetti stays busy performing in an acapella group, playing piano, participating in community theatre, writing and illustrating children’s books, gardening, and working with her husband to tend to their 40-acre rural property and pets. “I don’t sit around,” she said with a laugh. “I’m always on the go.”

At Skiff, Pernetti sees all ages of patients for a wide variety of hearing-related needs, from tinnitus and hearing loss screenings, to hearing-aid fittings and adjustments.

“I’m already liking being at a hospital of this smaller size,” Pernetti said. “There is such a personal quality, while still having a high level of professionalism. There’s a feel to it I really like.”
