In the early 2000s, Skiff Medical Center hosted an annual women’s health conference. Women in the community attended presentations and asked questions of health care professionals to learn more about taking care of themselves and their families.

The conference ended with the close of the first decade of the new millennium, but Newton Daily News created a social event in its place. Ladies' Night Out is a place where women browsed collections from local vendors.

“Skiff was still heavily involved,” Stephanie Alexander, Skiff Medical Center’s public relations and marketing manager, said of Newton Daily News’ event. “We had keynote speakers and service lines that joined the other vendors selling cooking supplies and jewelry.”

When attendance at the annual event began to decline, Skiff and the NDN decided to combine both the vendor show and the women’s health conference for an afternoon of fun and health education. From noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 25, Skiff Medical Center and the NDN will host the inaugural Ladies Night Out Women’s Health Conference at DMACC’s Newton campus conference center.

Any member of the community is welcome to attend at no charge, and Alexander urges women to come and go as their schedules allow.

“The more the merrier, both for vendors and attendees. We want to make it big, helpful and fun. The more folks who are excited to come out, the better we can make it for next year and years to come,” she said.

Breakout sessions on women’s health will begin at 12:15 p.m. Alexander said Skiff currently plans to have two different sessions during each time slot, one geared toward maintaining health as women age and another focused on forming healthy habits at as young women. During these sessions, one group might discuss bone health while the other learns about meal preparation. During each session, women will have the opportunity to ask questions of the local physicians as well as visiting doctors who will lead each group.

“Our goal is to do at least 10 presentations,” Alexander said. “As we finalize exactly what each session is, we’ll promote those on our Facebook page.”

Around 4 p.m., a keynote speaker will address the show crowd. A complimentary happy hour will follow, and women can clink glasses as they browse, buy and sample goods.
