Engel named Skiff DAISY Award winner

June 1, 2018

Elisabeth Engel, registered nurse at Skiff Medical Center, was recognized for making a remarkable impression on patients, families and staff during the organization’s DAISY award ceremony on May 9.

The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses was presented to Engel following the nomination from colleagues Keri Schippers, Donna Spidel, Ashley Foster and Stephanie Machin.

“Elisabeth comes to work every day with a smile on her face and the goal of touching someone’s heart that day,” the nomination read. “This is one nurse who demonstrates the core values of Skiff in everything she does.”

One example of Engel’s compassion included planning a Valentine’s Day party for a pediatric patient whose hospitalization meant she was missing the holiday event at her school. Another instance concerned a patient who was unable to eat or drink, but who was craving Pepsi – Engel took the time to make Pepsi-flavored ice chips, a gesture that truly touched the patient and their family. Engel also spends her downtime at work seeking out crossword puzzles, coloring pages and other fun activities to provide entertainment for her patients.

“Skiff is very fortunate to have Elisabeth as a staff nurse,” the nomination concluded. “Her future is very bright, and this is only the beginning.”

Engel was one of seven nurses nominated for this year’s DAISY award. The other nurses recognized during the ceremony were Sue Bauman, Lauren Clark, Pamela Dougherty (nominated twice), Donna Kearse, Ellen Ritter and Donna Spidle.

Chief Operating Officer Sonja Ranck said it is appropriate the ceremony is held each year during Nurses’ Week. “This is a wonderful time for all of us to pause and say thank you to our nurses,” she said. “It’s also a time for each nurse to take a moment to be proud of the profession they represent, as each nurse brings something special to their role.”
