Conner inducted into UNI Hall of Excellence

November 22, 2017

Skiff Medical Center is proud to announce that hospital president Laurie Conner was recently inducted into the Elinor A. Crawford and William R. Thrall Hall of Excellence at the UNI College of Education School of Kinesiology, Allied Health and Human Services. This is a significant honor that provides recognition of distinguished UNI graduates.

“I was surprised and humbled when I learned of this honor,” Conner said. “I loved my time at UNI, so this meant a lot. I was proud to have close friends and colleagues in attendance at the induction ceremony, along with almost all of my family.”

After graduating from UNI with a degree in community health education, Conner initially worked for the American Lung Association of Iowa. She went on to work at Iowa Health System, Dallas County Hospital (as CEO) and Mercy West Lakes Hospital (as administrator). She earned her master’s in public healthcare administration at Drake University. She has been the president of Skiff Medical Center since early this year, and also holds a role as vice president of Mercy Health Network.

Bob Ritz, Mercy Health Network CEO, said he is proud to congratulate Conner on this recognition. “Laurie is truly a consummate leader guided by our values and passion for excellence. Laurie is highly regarded for her commitment to purpose, strong leadership skills and track record of performance. Her induction into the Hall of Excellence is a most fitting recognition for her many accomplishments as a health-care executive.”

Mike Wegner, Interim President, Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, agreed, saying, “This is a well-deserved recognition. Laurie is a  talented executive who has made a tremendous impact improving health care in Iowa throughout her career.”

Sonja Ranck, Skiff’s Chief Operating Officer, has known Conner as a colleague at Mercy since 2010, but grew close to her when both became involved with Skiff’s Mercy affiliation.

“Laurie is a visionary,” Sonja said. “Actualizing her goals is completely natural for her. She has high expectations of herself and those around her, and that is how she is guiding us into making this hospital the best.”

Sonja said she isn’t at all surprised Conner was brought into the Hall of Excellence. “It’s a major award, acknowledging significant service over Laurie’s career to date,” Sonja said. “It is recognizing an individual’s body of work as being so admirable they wish to have it modeled for their current students, that they might duplicate such success in their own worklife.”

In addition to having graduated from the school, inductees to the Hall of Excellence must have:

  • developed mastery of the knowledge base within their profession
  • contributed significantly as a teacher, leader, executive and/or administrator and be widely recognized for the quality of that contribution to their profession
  • demonstrated scholarly activity through publications and presentations related to their profession
  • contributed significantly to their profession while holding offices in professional organizations of state, regional, national and international scope
  • demonstrated a cumulatative record (including awards and honors) of effective and enthusiastic service to their profession with the intent to bring useful knowledge and pertinent information to their field
  • completed at least 10 years of service to the profession
